As an individual publication editor I’m surprised by how little of that I see. It’s even rarer that, say, I tell a writer no, we cannot in good conscience publish something that makes fun of people with [well-known autoimmune disease] and they don’t readily change it. The above example actually happened but the guy fixed it no problem.
That said, hate can be a real money maker. I wrote an article once spewing hatred at anti-vaxers and telling them I wished they would all die. The stats took off like a moon launch. Anti-vaxers were going ballistic in the responses. I got a nastygram from Medium and had to take it down. The rewritten version got, oh, hang on, let me check...98 views, 556 claps, and earned $4.08.
The original kept showing up on my Partner Program list as “This article has been deleted,” along with respectable dollar amounts, for months, which seems weird. No one has ever been able to explain that to me.
