Corionaviruses are a group of related RNA viruses known to infect animals and humans. COVID-19 is the name given to the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, one of seven coronaviruses known to infect humans. Of those seven, four cause common cold symptoms and the remaining three, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 cause serious, life-threatening illnesses. A realistic hope is that vaccines knock COVID-19 down to the level of a bad cold or flu.
