For me this is complicated because I participate in Gospel music. I discovered it as part of an unusual period in my life, and never forgot it. Then more recently I’m back at it with a vengeance. Thing is, it’s not the sort of thing one can throw on like an article of clothing. I prepare for the auditions, show up at rehearsals, place myself under the unquestioning tutelage of the director or directors (a choir is not a democracy!), work hard, get on the stage and give it all I have. A woman who directs one very challenging choir I participate in has called me “Faithful Paul.” I treasure that.

I’d be interested in your thoughts about this. I have written about it before and received good and helpful responses.
