I don’t know about “used to.” The community goes on, but it’s fluid. There were people, say, last year who used to read and interact with my writing, and who’s writing I read and interacted with, but who seem to have fallen off the edge of the earth. I miss them but new people have emerged. Also sometimes they return. Welcome back Zelda Pinwheel.
Medium is the closest thing I have to social media since dropping out of Facebook. I tried Twitter and Reddit, but found them boring and pretty much useless. Since ditching all that I do considerably more Medium writing.
One thing that hasn’t changed is that there are people here who want to engage seriously, who obviously construct their responses carefully and thoughtfully. That’s not to say that there are zero trolls. It’s just that I have only encountered one or two amid hundreds of good people. That may be due to what I write about.
I’m addicted to Medium, I admit it. It’s true that words matter here. As long as there are people here who are not afraid of vulnerability, who write from the heart, and who encourage me when I do so (looking at you Agnes Louis) I don’t see why I should enter a twelve step program.
