I don’t know which is more depressing — that, or the responses to the effect that of course it would be so: People are so awful and while animals appear to love you back in this uncomplicated way. So not only are we more willing to provide for the physical needs of animals than those of fellow humans, but we are unwilling to make the effort to establish or maintain human relationships, so full of demands and complexities, so we turn to the relative ease of human/animal relationships.
