I guess the early church fathers were made of sterner stuff. I recall a sermon by James Pike wherein he quotes Tertullian to the effect that from heaven the elect will be able to "rejoice in the sufferings of the damned." A quick internet search revealed to me that Augustine, Aquinas, and Tertullian all indudged such fantasies, as did Johnathan Edwards (no surprise there!).
