I often wondered at my own motivation, and that of my life partner.* Until our analog TV became obsolete we were fans of shows like Criminal Minds, the CSI series, Bones, and Cold Case. Right at the time of obsolescence I was into The Following. I always watched that alone — it wasn’t her scene. I don’t know if you are familiar with it — gory AF.
We asked each other at that time, is their anything we couldn’t live without? Having answered in the negative, and flat screens at that time being quite pricey as I recall, and not wanting to be soaked by Cox or some such, we left it to gather dust.
Fast forward to my wife this year mentioning how she missed us leaning into each other on the sofa as we watched all that blood and gore, so for Hanukkah / Christmas we went to Best Buy and bought ourselves one of the now much less pricey smart TVs. The first thing we watched, having a Prime subscription through our cell phone service, was an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, followed by something about TinTin. Is this what it means to be old, that we no longer seek that adrenaline rush? Time will tell.
*who is everything to me.
