I read Blood Meridian that is the unabridged audio book. It really is everything you say. Personally I prefer Stella Maris which is a companion book for The Passenger which is also great.
Stella Maris would stand on its own though, even if you had not read The Passenger. It concerns a major off-stage character from The Passenger. As a philosophical novel it beats Blood Meridian IMHO.
