I thought that “Let the cat out of the bag” referred to the cat-o-nine-tails used to sailing ships to inflict punishment upon sailors. The cat-o-nine-tails was ordinarily kept in a bag, but if an infraction or misdeed came to light, the “cat” might be let “out of the bag.”
