I was assaulted by a man when I was in my twenties. I too felt like less of a man. This was in the 1970s. I thought I was supposed to punch the guy out or something. The guy was the minister of a church I was attending, so I was able to escape the situation by leaving the church.
It was in that church that I first encountered and participated in African-American gospel music, which is an vital part of my life to this day. Music outlasted that minister's deeply flawed personality. That doesn't surprise me though.
Schopenhauer believed music would outlast the universe. I think he was on to something.
