I was on Medium for years before I even thought about putting things behind the paywall. In fact I was present at the creation (of the paywall). When I started regularly paying for my membership through my writing I thought I was right up town!

I write what I want to write because I want to write it. The little Stripe payments are icing on the cake is all. The fact that I now have four (count em !— four!) curated stories just tickles me pink every time I see the little 3-item sub list under one of my responses and realize that they are all mine! This past month I broke the $10 barrier and I tell you I have been insufferable.
