I won’t know until next month how the new payment system will affect me. I don’t do this for the money anyway. However, the money is a form of recognition, like claps, so that’s not entirely true. Everyone loves recognition.

Last month I made all of $18.98. That was a new high, so I was insufferable, telling anyone who didn’t run away fast enough.

My most recent Stripe payment was for $1.08 but closer examination revealed that was for the four days of the transition period. That is I guess it was the transition period. It was definitely for four days, so it doesn’t tell me much, if anything. I had to wonder when I saw some of the “my Medium income fell by 90%” posts if the writers just didn’t see the 4 day caveat, but I have no real way of knowing, except that the people posting were writers who I knew were smart and all that, so they surely would have noticed.

Money, claps, whatever —it is recognition I crave, like every other member of my species. I’m still waiting for the first clap on my most recent post so if you need me I’ll be curled up on my kitchen floor, crying.
