I'm a guy who goes to church every Sunday and I can’t avoid the same conclusion. It follows logically if one believes God is merciful. A human consciousness cannot handle eternity. Plus, it has biblical support. What descriptions there are of heaven in the New Testament focus on the absence of pain and suffering. No pain and suffering in oblivion!
Plus, Jesus said "The kingdom of God is among you." Meaning, of course, that his followers are supposed to bring it about on earth. The results have been mixed.
At 74 I'm no longer afraid of death. I'm afraid of suffering because who isn't? But death? Oblivion? It's been fun, God. If you want to take me now, that would be OK. OTOH I'm still having loads of fun, so it's OK if you hold off for a few years. When it starts to really suck, we'll talk.
