I'm afraid of the suffering that generally precedes death, because who isn't? But the non-existence part? Not so much. Mind you I'm a guy who goes to church every Sunday, who sings in the choir. But that's not for the hope of heaven. It's something like the "outside in" technique of acting. Through the act of worship I become part of the story. We are creatures of story.

I'm 74 and there are times when if feels like one of those movies where you find yourself wishing they'd wrap it up already. But I'm basically healthy, and I have cool things to do, mostly musical, that involve other people. So I'm like, it's OK God, you can hold off for now.

So to get back to what I was saying, we are creatures of story. Stories are the most important things we have. Each of our lives is a story, inextricably enmeshed with those of others, and with the world.

It's stories all the way down.
