Isn't the philosophical issue something like, we see that the more removed we get from the things that concern our survival as life forms, the less they make intuitive sense? This is true in the macroscopic realm as well when we get to distant galaxies. Gravity isn't enough to hold them together so we have to apply the dark matter bandaid.
