My dad, an avid amateur astronomer and active AAVSO person, built a solar telescope which projected an image of the sun about the size of a soccer ball onto a screen. I remember how fascinating it was to look at the roiling of the solar surface, along with the sun spots, which were clearly visible. Sometimes we even saw prominences on the edge of the image.
