My mom would grab a toy me and one of my brothers was fighting over and toss it in the trash, saying something like, "If you can't share it neither one of you can have it!" She didn't have to do that more than once or maybe twice, but I remember it.
I'd have to know the individual circumstances in those cases you describe, but there are times you have put down your proverbial foot when it comes to toddlers.
