My sister-in-law fell for something similar, one of those you-have-to-buy-this-overpriced-antivirus-sostware-before-it's-too-late schemes. I knew from listening to the Reply All podcast how they worked. She called me in tears because she'd called her brother who unhelpfully just called her a dumb stupid idiot instead of trying to help. It turned out she'd given the guy her bank account number before she heeded the red flags & hung up. When she calmed down a bit I told her those guys are making vast piles of $ from the (semi-legal) practice of selling $45 anti-virus software for $450 and so had no reason to take the additional risk of doing (illegal) things like cleaning out bank accounts (I'd gleaned this from Reply All) and so she should call her bank as soon as it opened. As it turned out no harm done. She called me and thanked me profusely. I got to be the hero in contrast to her jerk brother.
