Originally pants didn't have pockets and men carried purses. Hence the profession "cutpurse" mentioned in Shakespeare.
The men in Shakespeare's time were men as men should be. Using their trusty purses, they could repell any Sabertooth threatening their families.
With this in mind, I carry a purse unless I'm out on my bike in which case I have my bike bag, which is on the clunky side.
I even make my own purses. I got into sewing during the pandemic but cloth masks are pretty much useless at this stage.
As documented by Shakespeare, my purse can be used as a weapon in case of a Sabertooth attack.
I can defend my family.
