OTOH it would have helped if he wasn't a dick about it. When we are children we don't realize how deeply flawed our parents are and when we glimpse it, it's overwhelming.
Then when we have children and we are struggling to provide for them while maintaining some small space of happiness for ourselves, we fuck it up.
I think Rachel Cusk is right. We always fail our children. It's built into the system.
