Well-meaning people closed asylums and made involuntary commitment all but impossible. Of course some asylums were hell holes and involuntary commitment can be abused. But now mentally ill people go largely untreated. I wish I had the answer. After the asylums were closed they were supposed to go into monitored community housing, but the money wasn't there and where it was, there were NIMBYs.
