Thanks for this article. When I’m in the thick of it I often have trouble sympathizing with the drivers. If they didn’t cut in front of me to take right turns I wouldn’t need to aggravate them by taking the lane. Traffic circles — I think that’s what you mean by roundabouts — are no picnic either. I always find I have to take the lane there as well. If I were to stay to the right I’d have to keep cutting across lanes of traffic, which is dangerous.
Most drivers respond pretty well to my taking the lane. There are exceptions, and some situations are hairier than others, but I don’t want to fall into the fallacy of generalizing from the few to the many.
