I recently came into possession of a little memo book containing poems my mom wrote when my dad was in the process of divorcing her. The grounds for the divorce was that she was an alcoholic. You could do that in the 1980s. The real reason was that she suffered from scleroderma and he couldn't cope with it.
I knew he treated her abominably, cheating openly, but now I have some idea how it crushed her spirit. I have many times promised myself that should my wife become afflicted with a painful and debilitating illness I will not be such a coward.
