The more I think about it the more I come around to the, conclusion? No, that's to strong of a word. However that may be, I can't help but wonder if the ultimate mercy of God might be eternal oblivion.
Think about it. Given the amount of time involved in eternity, which as a human being I have trouble getting my mind around, no matter how joyous the joys of Heaven, it's going to get old, all that feasting, singing, whatever (with dead relatives? Spare me! That would be Hell from the outset) and so will have to be increased, and increased and increased, at length becoming indistinguishable from the torments of Hell.
The only escape from this would be a reset button, erasing memory, but then it's all a lie, making God a liar, which is unpalatable. So maybe you get to the pearly gates and St. Peter says, "You win! You get to pass on the whole dreary mess and just cease to exist!" The problem is we can't imagine our own non-existence except in the most abstract and intellectual sort of way, so the mind balks.
In the end I just have to have faith that God will know what to do with me when I'm dead.
