Ultimately there is no reason to favor a pessimistic over an optimistic conception of the universe. Both are human constructions. I suppose a pessimistic conception conveys a sense of robust shoulder-to-the-wheel manliness, enabling one to set oneself apart from all those sissies with their truth-and-beauty bullshit, but other than that...
