We evolved to survive and pass our genes on, and that doesn't require an understanding of what happens on the sub-atomic level. So is it really such a surprise that it doesn't make intuitive sense to us?
Survival doesn't require an understanding of galactic clusters either, so why be surprised that we look out there and find something counterintuitive going on, such that we had to fix it by introducing the dark matter, which try as we might we can't detect.
