We want to see justice triumph. We want heroic heros. Squid Game gives us none of that, which is why many find it unsatisfying. Yet that's what redeems it from being just another shitty action movie, tying justice, morality, and human greatness up in a nice neat bow. Instead we are left with unanswerable questions. Even the central idea which everyone keeps talking about, the critique of capitalism, collapses as we approach, because the alternative take away glares at us, "You see? Losers are losers. Give them more money that they know how to dream about and they still can't help themselves."
It really is a bleak take on the human condition, worthy of Dostoevsky. Even the would-be hero cop dies, his mission unfulfilled. Yet it's a hit show. I give it 5 stars.
