Well, after it survives a few tests. General Relativity explained the orbit of Mercury while explaining everything Newtonian physics explained (that latter is important and is why "modified gravity" explanations of why galaxies don't fly apart fail) but its slam dunk was when starlight was shown to curve in response to gravitational fields exactly as Einstein predicted.
