I have read conservative articles on Medium, most of which seem to be written by disaffected Republicans crying in their beer about the rise of Trumpism, and how this does not reflect the “real” Republican party which they then go on to explain in economic terms, lower taxes, limited government etc and while I disagree at least it makes sense. My immediate reaction however is, isn’t this the same “small government” Republican party that promotes the intrusion of government into the reproductive decisions of women? Isn’t this the same “big tent” Republican party that, from the Southern Strategy onwards if not previously, courted racism with nudges and winks? Isn’t this the save “fiscal responsibility” Republican party that sends the deficit and the national debt through the roof every time? Trump was inevitable. He doesn’t give a personal rat’s ass about abortion but, as an intuitively spot on reader of the zeitgeist, he knew there were votes there and so he said to himself why not? He intuited what Americans wanted to hear about the pandemic — that it was no big deal, it was only affecting the hated coastal elites¹, that it would be over by Easter, then by July 4th, then by election day —as with a doom prophet predicting the end of the world, it didn’t matter to his followers how many times he moved the goal posts. SARS-CoV-2² was something that only affected those lib-tard coastal elites, until it wasn’t. And the sad thing? That strategy came within a hair’s breadth of paying off. He once said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and it would not hurt his popularity. The corpse on Fifth would have just been one of the coastal elites anyway so die, bitches, die. A quarter million dead including exponentially³ increasing numbers of “real Americans” and he still damn near brought it off. In spite of myself I gotta admire the guy. It all defies logic but when has human history ever proceeded logically? That’s why with less that a week to go I was still calling it for Trump even as I made calls to battleground states on behalf of Biden.
Hey man I hear you. I’d love to read a nice sense-making conservative who laid off the crabbing about not being heard on Medium along with the never-Trump hand-wringing. So once again, write me something, and be sure to tag me. It would sure be a welcome break from lefty when-is-the-Democratic-party-going-to-realize-that-its-only-hope-lies-with-the-progressive-wing articles.
