When I was in college I re-read The Yearling and when I got to the end, "Somewhere beyond the sink-hole, past the magnolia, under the live oaks, a boy and a yearling ran side by side, and were gone forever." I was fighting back tears on the AA train.
You know what book slays me to this day? War and Peace, especially the audio book. When Madame What's-her-name's son dies in the war, or when Prince Andre dies, but especially when Pierre and Natasha— “leave it to me, dear. I’ll tell him,” — “Dare I hope?” — OMG I’m getting choked right now just thinking about it.
