While your diagnosis is spot on, there is no way this is going to happen. Even if the Dems get a 50-50 senate they would have to be 100% on board with everything in the two years before that changes, as surely it will, if it even happens in the first place, which I doubt — so progressives may as well get their knives out.

Obama had majorities in both houses and only managed to get watered down healthcare in the face of unified republican stonewalling and wavering Dems. So he signed that half loaf. There’s a lot to be said for accepting half a loaf. Anti-abortionists did that for years, decades even, and look where they are now.
