Yes I wondered about this even before the pandemic. We used to sport buttons that said "QUESTION AUTHORITY." Who, I asked my friends, questions authority more thoroughly than a Trumper? Oh no, they’d say, Trumpers just accept the authority of Donald Trump. Sorry that won’t do. Whatever else one might say about Trumpism, it’s anti-establishment. Anti-science, anti news, anti fact, conspiratorial, and so on. One of my friends “back in the day” actually believed the CIA had emplanted a chip in her head enabling them to see with her eyes and hear with her ears. Sound familiar? Someone will say that a chunk of the political and media establishment figured out how to ride this wave and so they have. And? Columbia Records made big bucks on the cultural revolution of the 60s.
