You could really get into the weeds with that one. We want to make sense of things. It is essential for survival whether you are a Bushman or a Valley Girl. There are many kinds of survival. When I was in high school I didn't have to worry about being eaten by a lion. I had bullies eating me alive, for the first two and a half years anyway. There is physical survival, social survival, financial survival, oh wait, isn't that part of social survival? My head hurts already.
To to help make sense of things, we invented science. In order to be admitted to science you have to endure the initiation hazing ritual of mathematics. See adulthood rites.
We sense that science and mathematics may take us outside the world of our perceptions and into the "real" world, assuming that concept means anything. Yet the deeper we delve into science and math the more counter-intuitive the "real" world becomes. Maybe God is trying to tell us something.
