You may not remember George Wallace, but he was a racist former governor of the state of Alabama who ran as an independent for president in 1968, when I was 18. A group formed calling itself "Anarchists for Wallace." They would show up at his rallies and wildly cheer everything he said, however crazy or however innocuous, so that he had trouble making himself heard.
