You reminded me. My brother had a girlfriend who did that for my mom once or maybe even twice, and also for others, and got away with it. She had a slightly different method, that of entering bogus prices. Then she'd ask my mom, with perfect nonchalance, "Do you have any coupons?"
I also remember my mom telling my brother she wasn't doing it any more, for the obvious reason.
